And down at Abbey Fields stall holders did a roaring trade with food and drink stalls, competition and charity stalls all doing well.
Later in the afternoon a variety of entertainments took place from dancers and cheerleaders to martial arts displays. And of course the fun fair was on hand all afternoon and evening, after the grand raffle draw was made.
We don t know how much we raised in total yet but we think it should be more or less the same as last year when we gave out 4,000 to charities in the area. I did not see much of the activities as I was walking with the procession but we were very pleased at how the street collections went.
Leading the procession was Carnival Queen Kate Taylor who said she was having a wonderful day even though she found it all nerve wracking . Walking along side her was Mayor Graham Windybank, MP Andy King and members of the carnival committee.
President Dan Bench went ahead in a vehicle. Mr Bench has been working with the carnival since 1926 and has been President for 24 years.
I remember up until the war we had about 200 vehicle and 200 fancy dress walkers taking part, he said.
Figures have fallen and costs have gone up but this was still a great day. It was a shame about the rain as it meant no body could sit down in the field but it was still quite busy.
He also appealed for new carnival committee members to come forward to keep the carnival going for many years to come.
The Pridmore and Smith families took the overall prize for best float and were thrilled that they had. Their entry, Picture This, consisted jordan retro of them peering out from behind picture frames.
Helen Smith said the two families entered every year.
We got the idea for Picture This after a brainstorming session late one night, she said.
We have won prizes for coming first in our class before but we have not been judged overall winners. It is fantastic.
