Plastic manufacturing unit raided
Officials of the Puducherry Pollution Control Committee (PPCC) on Saturday conducted a raid on a plastic bag manufacturing unit that was manufacturing bags under 40 micron thickness. This is the first time such a unit has been unearthed in Puducherry.
According to an official of the PPCC, they received a tip off about the unit functioning at Mettupalayam industrial estate. The unit was manufacturing plastic bags of around 20 25 micron thickness and labelling the packets 40 microns, the official said.
Earlier it was believed that all thin jordan plastic bags were coming into Puducherry from Maharashtra, Goa and Tamil Nadu. The officials seized around six bundles of plastic bags.
They also disconnected all machinery. Power supply to the unit would be stopped on Monday, the official said.
Under Section 5 of the jordan Environment Protection Act, the PPCC had power to disconnect electricity to units manufacturing plastic bags under 50 jordan jordan ng> micron thickness. If the unit was found manufacturing illegal plastic bags despite the lack of electricity, owners would be imprisoned, the official said.
